Participate

You can participate in the following activities:

Students

Students engage in tasks ranging from electronic board layout, mechanical design, and software development to thermal modeling, instrument calibration, and mission operations planning. Students are also responsible for data analysis and will contribute to the joint scientific investigation alongside the Interstellar Mapping and Acceleration Probe (IMAP) mission. Beyond technical involvement, the program fosters mentoring relationships, professional development, and participation in scientific conferences, providing a comprehensive, hands-on experience that prepares students for future careers in space science and engineering. SSU students can send in a resume or senior design ideas to edeon@sonoma.edu.

Scouts

Are you a Scout? Join us this summer to get your Ham Radio badge. All activities are virtual and free. These are run by three enthusiastic and knowledgeable amateur radio operators, who regularly train new operators: Ann Bruner-Welch (KN6SDS), Darryl M Paule (KI6MSP), and Kathy Funke-Spicher (KM6URP).

This program ends with listening to communities talking with astronauts on the ISS, via the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) program. We have submitted a proposal to speak with the astronauts but we do not yet know if it will be selected. Either way, we support participants in setting up stations to listen to other ARISS sessions using amateur radio communications.

Amateur Radio Enthusiasts

In the Fall of 2025, our outreach program will integrate radio amateur skills and knowledge about CubeSats and 3UCubed-A, with Dr.Laura Peticolas (KN6FXN). This focus will expand the participants’ knowledge specifically on the different antennas needed to broadcast and receive signals from the approximately 435 Mhz radio spectrum. 3UCubed-A launches in October, 2025 and amateur radio enthusiasts can track the spacecraft and downlink data to help us out!

Subject Matter Experts

We are always looking for volunteers who want to support the next generation of engineers and scientists. Email edeon@sonoma.edu if you are interested in being a mentor and provide your CV and experience in this area.

Donate

You can help the 3UCubed team develop. Donors to the 3UCubed project support the participation of students from SSU, local HAM radio enthusiasts and scout members in workshops, job time and summer internships. We know that reaching the stars is a dream held by many. As a donor, you become part of creating these dreams for these participants.

Gifts are made to the SSU EdEon Programs via “Programs and More” on Sonoma Gives.

We’re happy to talk with you about ways you can donate and partner with us in giving students hands-on science and engineering experiences. Email edeon@sonoma.edu if you would like to connect with us.
